Title of the project: Development of novel fabrication technologies based on epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide (SiC) substrates for applications in the domains of Quantum Technologies and Technologies for Space.
Supervisors and Host institution: Prof. Philippe Godignon and Dr. Gemma Rius at Microelectronics Institute of Barcelona (IMB-CNM-CSIC)
The purpose of the current doctoral project is to advance and establish an integral, robust fabrication technology for epitaxial graphene electronic devices. A performance target is that they should be able to be operated in demanding or extreme conditions, such as HF applications, cryogenic conditions or high magnetic fields and high radiation levels.
"Being part of DOC-FAM and MSCA is a privilege for all of us, as it gave us the opportunity to continue our paths in research and contribute to the State of the Art in Science and Technology. We have the best support to develop both as researchers and as individuals."
I was born in Kazakhstan and raised in Athens, the capital of Greece. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Physics and my Master’s degree in Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. During my master I had the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary environment and train in nanofabrication and characterization techniques. The wide range of applications of nanotechnology and its beneficial impact to society, motivated me to pursue my studies with a PhD and build up my career as a researcher by obtaining further knowledge and training. The different projects that DOC-FAM covered inspired me to apply for the call and now I am in the fortunate position to work in the largest institute in Spain dedicated to the research and development of Micro and Nano Technology. This project helps me acquire all the necessary skills for performing high quality research in micro/nanofabrication combined with high analytical and problem solving skills that will compose a strong professional background I need to become a successful researcher. Moreover, it gives me the opportunity to develop a network of internal and external collaborators and present our work to the public by attending national and international conferences and publishing scientific articles.
FUNCTIONAL ADVANCED MATERIALS FOR EMERGING APPLICATIONS
Open to Early Stage Researchers worldwide. Register before 6 June 2021
Registration is now closed. However, you can watch the lectures of the DOC-FAM School on Functional Materials for Emerging Applications on Youtube here
We are pleased to announce the DOC-FAM School on Functional Advanced Materials for Emerging Applications, organized by ICMAB, CSIC, in the framework of the Doctoral Training Programme in Functional Advanced Materials (DOC-FAM) project (H2020-MSCA-COFUND-2016).
The school counts with plenary lectures of International experts in the field of advanced materials to give young researchers and students a worldwide view of the diferent and emerging applications in electronics, energy and nanomedicine.
Beyond the plenary lectures, the school will include technical talks, direct interactions with the lecturers, talks from the DOC-FAM fellows and poster presentations.
The school will be online, but there will be some interactive sessions and activities to encourage the networking and the interaction between participants and lecturers.
The school will be broadcast online and is open to registration from interested young researcher from around the world, although attendance is limitted to 85 participants.
We do not tolerate any type of conduct or behavior considered harassment or bullying.
ICMAB researchers will chair the lectures and technical talks

The DOC-FAM school is organized by the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB, CSIC) and will be held online, although the poster session on Thursday afternoon, will be at the ICMAB premises.
The organizers will send the link to attend the school to the lecturers and participants by mail during the week of 21-27 June 2021.
The platform used will be Zoom. We ask you to make sure that the Zoom platform works in your PC before the school, including microphone and camera. You can download the platform from zoom.us
We ask participants to remain with the microphone muted during the lectures and talks. However, they can open it during the questions time. The chat can also be used to ask questions, and will be a tool used for the organizers to give some information or announcements during the school.
The sessions will be recorded and will be available to attendees after the school. However, we encourage you to attend the sessions in live in order to interact with the speakers and participants and ask questions.
As mentioned above, the poster session on Thursday (1 July 202) afternoon will take place at the ICMAB premises (outdoors).
A maximum of 20 posters will be accepted. The organization will ensure to follow all the recommended safety measures (controlling the capacity, ensuring social distance, providing hydroalcoholic gel…).
In addition, we recommend that only local participants ask to present a poster. Participants can do so at the registration form, before 6 June 2021. We will confirm the acceptance of the poster session by 14 June 2021.
The ICMAB is located at the UAB Campus (Carrer dels Til·lers s/n).
For any questions or issues regarding the school, please don’t hesitate to contact DOC-FAM Project Manager, Laura Cabana at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Title of the project: Advanced photoelectrodes for next generation of solar energy storage: Photobatteries
Supervisors and Host institution: Dr. Teresa Andreu Arbella and Dr. Sebastian Murcia-López at Catalonia Institute of Energy Research (IREC)
Over a hundred years of global electricity demand has mostly relied on the fossil-fuel source, significantly impacting the ecosphere by CO2 emission. Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power have shown great promise to relieve the dependence on fossil fuels, thereby progressing towards a green Earth. However, due to the intermittent nature of renewables, the power generated cannot provide stable and consistent power delivery. Therefore, energy storage technologies, Batteries, are needed to address the challenges associated with modernizing the electric grid. Amongst various battery technologies, flow batteries are considered as the most promising contenders for large-scale energy storage systems, offering long hours of storage capacity. The focus of my PhD research is to define a new approach to store solar energy through integrated solar redox-flow batteries. I am exploring on the range of aspects and elements related to the design of the integration between the redox flow batteries and photovoltaic cell, to enable a simultaneous way of solar energy conversion and storage in one single device, `Solar redox flow batteries or Photobatteries´.
¨I am privileged to be welcomed as a DOC-FAM Marie-Curie Early stage researcher, which gave me a nice opportunity to get to know my other mates from various, multidisciplinary research fields.¨
I came from the beautiful, ancient metropolitan city, Calcutta, also called as `City of Joy´. My bachelor training in Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, later, a decent job in chemical industry, made me realise my craving for learning more advanced technologies. M.Sc. in Energy Science and Technology in Ulm University, Germany, not only gave me a broad exposure for technical learning but also made me mentally strong enough to accept all the challenges both in studies also in adapting the multidisciplinary environment. My passion for research in `Batteries` has started during my Master internship in Helmholtz Institute for Battery Research, Ulm, which further motivated me to carry out the Master thesis in Li-ion batteries. From the state-of-the-art and research experiences in Batteries, I came to know how important it is to progress in further research in Batteries to save our world from electricity scarcity. My MSCA-DOC-FAM PhD project offered me an efficient platform to continue with my passion for batteries research. Specially, DOC-FAM´s mobility opportunity has opened an extra window for globally outreaching my research work along with fruitful discussion with the well-reputated scientists having expertise in this field. As a short-term objective, I am focusing myself to finish the PhD thesis with publications in the peer-reviewed journals. In future, I would like to enter the industry once again to learn the real-time applications.
